Wakari Creek Mountain Biking

Wakari Creek has approximately 6km of purpose built beginner to intermediate grade mountain bike tracks. Starting from the car park on the corner of Wakari and Polwarth Roads, and easy grade track loops through Redwood plantation and native bush. The trail is shingled for all-weather use and is very popular with mountain bikers and runners.

More competent riders can head north from Wakari Creek up Leith Valley to the Nichols Creek track. This is a more challenging track which climbs for 6km through native bush. For mountain bike enthusiasts this is one of the best single-track climb/descents in the country. The start of the trail is on your left as you climb up Leith Valley Road, just after you cross over the first road bridge with wooden hand-rails. This trail is best ridden during dry weather as most of it is not shingled.

Signal Hill Mountain biking

Adjacent to Logan Park and located only three kilometres from central Dunedin, Signal Hill recreation reserve is known for having world class downhill mountain biking tracks. There are 3 main lines from top to bottom, with lots of rock gardens, gaps, jump and drop-offs. Signal Hill also has NZ's only purpose-built 4-cross track which is one of the largest in the world. These have been used for both NZ National and Oceania Championships in recent years.

In addition to downhill riding, Signal Hill also has trails aimed at cross-country and recreational riders. An easy-graded climbing track has recently been constructed that climbs from Logan Park High School up to the top of the hill. This is suitable for beginner level riders. There is also a steeper 4WD track bottom to top for those wanting a more challenging climb. Both of these tracks are suitable for runners and walkers, and can be ridden up or down.
